Following the instructions in Viadana's preface all of these pieces will have the following instrumentation: ChI SATTB conc, Tior ad plac, Org; ChII SATB cap; ChIII Ctto o V, S, A(with V e Ctto “storto”), T(with Trb e Vo), Org; ChIV A(with V “all' ottava” e Ctto “storto”), T(with Trb), T(with Trb e V), B(with Trb e Vo, e Fag), Org. The author also comments that the cappella of ChII should have at least 16 singers and will sound even better with 20 to 30 singers and instrumentalists. In addition, he recommends multiple voices for the “solo” vocal parts of ChIII and ChIV and uses the plural for instrumental indications as well (e.g., con violini e cornetti storti).
