Remarks: On her journey to Florence in 1589 to marry Ferdinando de’ Medici, Christine of Lorraine was welcomed to Pisa by celebrations that included a mock naval battle on the Arno between Christians and Turks. At the end of the battle, the Arabi sang three ottave (stanzas of eight lines) written by Sforza Oddi and set to music by Buonavita. The first piece was a solo aria, the second, Ecco barbara turba, in ten parts, performed by fifty-two musicians, including six trombones, four cornetts, and organ. The third, Ma poi, che’l don di sì, in twenty parts, was performed by the same ensemble.
